Eldrick "Tiger" Woods, the American professional golfer and five-time Masters champion, was arrested on May 29, 2017, by Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies on a driving under the influence charge after his vehicle rolled over in Jupiter, Florida.[1][2] The single-car crash occurred at around 2:10 a.m. local time on Military Trail near the Grassy Waters Preserve.[1]
Deputies reported Woods showed signs of impairment, including lethargic movements, slow speech, and profuse sweating. He performed poorly on field sobriety tests. A search found two white pills in his pocket later identified as hydrocodone, a prescription painkiller. Woods told deputies he took several medications.[3]
At the jail, Woods registered 0.00 on two breathalyzer tests. He declined a urine test, leading to an additional charge of refusing to submit. He was released later that morning on $4,000 bond.[1][2]
On June 6, 2017, then-U.
S. President Donald Trump told the New York Post he had spoken with Woods after the arrest. "I think he’s doing great, he’s doing good," Trump said, noting Woods tested negative for alcohol and faced physical pressure from back and leg ailments.[4]
Trump added: "He lives a life of pain. He has a lot of pain. He’s an amazing guy. He’s an amazing athlete. He does have pain. He doesn’t have an alcohol problem, but he does have pain."[4]
Woods apologized publicly the same day as his arrest, attributing the incident to an unexpected reaction to prescription medications. The DUI charge was later dropped in October 2017 after he completed a pretrial diversion program.[2]
