Bucknor call overturned after missing Bauers' bag touch
MLB umpire C.B. Bucknor ruled Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers out at first base on a routine play during Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, prompting laughter and quick reversal. In the bottom of the sixth inning at American Family Field, Bauers lined out to second baseman Ben Williamson, whose wide throw followed a knockdown. Bucknor, stationed at first, called Bauers out for missing the bag despite a tag, but replay review showed clear contact with the base only feet away.
The overturned call returned Bauers to first base, where he smiled along with Brewers manager Pat Murphy. Rays manager Kevin Cash smirked at the sequence. Former New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain posted on X: "This is so bad you just have to laugh!! Something has to be done."
Bauers finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, including a solo home run off Rays reliever Yoendrys Gomez in the eighth inning. Catcher Gary Sánchez also hit a solo homer in the sixth. The Brewers won 6-2 on March 31, 2026, in Milwaukee, improving to 4-1 while the Rays fell to 2-3.
