Former Washington cornerback Darrell Green, a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee who played from 1983 to 2002, is participating in U.S. flag football national team trials in Chula Vista, California.[1][2]
The trials, set for November 15-17, 2024, at the Olympic Training Center, involve about 100 men and women athletes competing for national team coaches' attention. Green qualified through a digital combine ahead of the in-person event.[3][4]
USA Football senior director of high performance and national teams Callie Brownson said Green warranted a closer look after posting impressive testing results despite his age. "He’s a rare athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete this week," Brownson said.[4]
Green hopes to earn an invitation to training camp next month and a roster spot on the 2026 U.S. men's national flag football team, which is scheduled to compete at the world championships in Germany.[4][5] Flag football will debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.[3]
During his NFL career, Washington selected Green in the first round, 28th overall, of the 1983 NFL draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville. He appeared in 295 games, recording 1,202 tackles, 54 interceptions and six interception returns for touchdowns. Green won Super Bowls following the 1987 and 1991 seasons, earned seven Pro Bowl selections and one first-team All-Pro nod in 1991. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.[1][2]
The U.S. men's flag football team has won six of the last seven world championships since 2010. Other trial participants include former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin and ex-Florida State guard O’Mariah Gordon.[4][5]
Green recently attended his No. 28 jersey retirement ceremony during Washington's October 20, 2024, home game against Carolina.[6]
"I’m going to give it my best and I’ll walk away with my head up, either way," Green said on USA Football's Instagram.[4]
